An array of development experience in nondestructive testing

Experience covers research and development of techniques, equipment and simulations. Instrumentation developed for a major metals producer was used in all of their facilities that fabricated raw materials for airframe use. Over 30 instruments were fabricated for production use. Design and development of the software, electronics and mechanics used for commercial ultrasonic scanning systems, including the construction of scanning bridges, manipulators and support structures.

The largest system is a 110 meter long system for plate inspection and the smallest a 1 meter tank for development and laboratory inspection. Implementation of the large systems improved the production capacity of the facility, increasing the revenue capacity by $250 million/year.
The laboratory tank shows a manipulator design used on 10 production system (3 manipulators on each system) that allows the transducers to maintain normalcy to the part under inspection. The laboratory tank, while having development capability for the large system also has positional accuracy useable for acoustic microscopy used for metallographic analysis.

Acoustic Microscope

The acoustic microscope is capable of producing an acoustic image (right) of a coin. When compared to a photograph one can see the scratches and details of the coin’s surface. The same capability allows mapping of minute details of internal anomalies of parts for analysis.

Production Scanning Systems

15 meter tanks
30 meter tanks

MFAW NDT has identified potential suppliers and aided in the development and installation of large, phased array part scanners of 15 and 30 meter lengths
Currently MFAW NDT is aiding in the installation a 20 meter tank phased array large part scanning system.

For all of the above systems MFAW NDT has written the inspection procedures and worked to have the systems approved by the aerospace customer the parts are produced for. MFAW NDT also aids in the development of system specifications for systems purchased from a third party.

In House Capability and Retrofit Services

Retrofit Xactex scanner MFAW NDT joystick interface
MFAW NDT designed and fabricated linear stepper motor systems for low noise performance. LiniStepper drives are utilized in this design.
Scan setup for testing E-127 standard metal properties
Assortment of test search units for conventional and phased array testing.
The above MFAW NDT prototype for maintain tubing centered in eddy current test coil design currently in use in a Russia production plant. MFAW NDT has the capability to prototype small fixtures and jigs for various inspection applications.
Scan setup for crack detection

MFAW NDT also retrofits scanning systems to bring them up to current capabilities: MFAW NDT designed and fabricated linear stepper motor drives are used for low noise performance and, along with custom joystick interfaces, are used to prove our customers with a custom, high performance laboratory system. MFAW NDT can write special application control software or customize commercial packages to meet your needs.
MFAW NDT has three in house immersion scanning systems that are used for development and small production runs of parts. We have several high speed digitizers to capture data for later analysis or for interpretation by your POD or MAPOD applications.
